Maria Pepita

Designer

Maria Jose Galarza Galarza is a third-generation jewelry designer born in Chordeleg, Azuay — a town internationally recognized for its rich artisan legacy and masterful metalwork. Raised within a family of creators, she grew up immersed in craftsmanship: her father and maternal grandfather were jewelers, her mother embroidered traditional polleras and blouses, and her grandmother wove toquilla straw hats. In Chordeleg, where many homes double as artisan workshops, creativity was not simply encouraged — it was a way of life.

From an early age, Maria Jose’s artistic instinct was unmistakable. Her school notebooks were filled with detailed sketches of earrings, quiet evidence of a calling that was already beginning to take shape. At just seventeen years old, one of those designs was brought to life by her maternal uncle, a jeweler — a defining moment that marked the true beginning of her journey.

With over 17 years dedicated to the art of filigree, Maria Jose designs with a philosophy rooted in patience, cultural identity, and deep respect for ancestral knowledge. For her, filigree is more than a technique — it is the memory of a people, a reflection of heritage, and a timeless expression of beauty passed down through generations. Each piece requires hours of meticulous work, transforming fine threads of metal into forms that carry both history and intention.

Guided by a commitment to preservation, Maria Jose continues to create pieces in collaboration with artisans from her hometown, ensuring that the tradition remains alive despite the growing pressures of industrialization. While migration once led her to close her physical store in Chordeleg, her vision has never wavered: to reopen its doors one day and further strengthen the future of artisan craftsmanship.

Today, her work is driven by a purpose that extends far beyond design. Every creation represents an opportunity to sustain artisan livelihoods, protect cultural identity, and allow the artistry of Chordeleg to shine on an international stage. More than adornment, her jewelry invites a deeper connection — reminding those who wear it that true beauty carries heritage, intention, and meaning.
